Racial Game Again!

The Vice Chancellor of MARA (Ibrahim Abu Shah), I think does not deserve to be in that post. He is the education field. He should be promoting and supporting Abdul Khalid’s suggestion. He should encourage the move as it allows more people to gain knowledge and educate themselves. He should have stood up to the idea that an individuals’ race should not be the determinant as to whether he or she will be able to pursue their studies in the institution of their choice.

However, he chose to give a lame excuse. He said that UITM is a public university which was reserved for bumiputras, as a majority of students in leading fields of study in higher-learning institutions in Malaysia were non-Bumis. This is absolute crap. What is he talking about? Does he have the statistics? Go and look it up before making such comments. It is a well known fact that there are more bumiputra’s in the public universities. The non-bumi’s might have filled the so called non-existent quota but the courses they get are not something that they opt for or are in demand.

I thought after 51 years of Merdeka, the Malaysian spirit is already instilled in us. However, it is so sad to see that we have not moved forward since 1957. Instead we have moved so much to the back that I think it will take a whole new generation to change the existing attitudes and to be able to say “I am a Malaysian” and truly mean it. We are no longer as close as we were about 50 years back. In 1957, I could be of any ethnic origin. I was allowed to pursue my education if my performance in school was good. I did not have to belong to a particular group or nationality to further my studies. Now, that is what should be the scene now. Even better, we should have already been giving free education at university levels for all our students. Our students are our assets. There is no wastage of public funds when the funds are actually utilized for educating the people of the country.

However, It is sad that we have chose to say that we are separate although we are citizens of the same country. It is sad to say that we have separate institutions for different races so that we can each try to out do the other race. It is sad to say that we are Malaysians but we have three different types of education systems! It is sad to see our students in the university, who are suppose to be forward looking and open minded being so lost in their own tiny world.

Why should they protest if non-bumis are allowed to study with them? Are the non-bumis a threat to them? Of course not! No one is a threat to anyone. Everyone should be given equal opportunity. I have just one thing to ask the guys from MARA who joined the rally on Tuesday. Just imagine what your reaction will be if you were in a country which you call home and be told that you can’t study in this institution because you are not of a specific race. Or your parents tell you that they won’t finance your education because you are not worth it! Just take a minute and ponder upon it. I am sure you will realize the hurt the non-malays go through everyday in our present Malaysia which we call home.

You guys got to understand one thing, we are not telling you that you should not pursue your studies. We are just saying that everyone should have equal opportunity. We are not a threat. We just want to be accepted. We are born in the same land. There is nothing different in us. We breathe the same air. Lets change and live as one big family. Stop trying to identify yourselves as a race. Start thinking like a Malaysian and not a Bumiputra. Be like Abdul Khalid. He has not betrayed his race. He has just proved that he is a true Malaysian!

Boy, am I glad to see Abdul Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor’s MB. He is really carrying out his duties as promised. It takes a courageous person and a man of values to make such a suggestion as you made especially in today’s political arena where the racial card is the one most played with. Hat’s off to you Sir! You really have the Malaysian spirit!

May 13th 1969

May 13th 1969 is a day that most Malaysians don’t want to remember. A day of racial tension and blood bath. 19years later we stand as a united society who don’t want anything remotely as close as that day happening again. The older folks may have stories to tell us of this ordeal, lets keep it as a bad memory that we don’t want to ever see again.
