Racial Game Again!

The Vice Chancellor of MARA (Ibrahim Abu Shah), I think does not deserve to be in that post. He is the education field. He should be promoting and supporting Abdul Khalid’s suggestion. He should encourage the move as it allows more people to gain knowledge and educate themselves. He should have stood up to the idea that an individuals’ race should not be the determinant as to whether he or she will be able to pursue their studies in the institution of their choice.

However, he chose to give a lame excuse. He said that UITM is a public university which was reserved for bumiputras, as a majority of students in leading fields of study in higher-learning institutions in Malaysia were non-Bumis. This is absolute crap. What is he talking about? Does he have the statistics? Go and look it up before making such comments. It is a well known fact that there are more bumiputra’s in the public universities. The non-bumi’s might have filled the so called non-existent quota but the courses they get are not something that they opt for or are in demand.

I thought after 51 years of Merdeka, the Malaysian spirit is already instilled in us. However, it is so sad to see that we have not moved forward since 1957. Instead we have moved so much to the back that I think it will take a whole new generation to change the existing attitudes and to be able to say “I am a Malaysian” and truly mean it. We are no longer as close as we were about 50 years back. In 1957, I could be of any ethnic origin. I was allowed to pursue my education if my performance in school was good. I did not have to belong to a particular group or nationality to further my studies. Now, that is what should be the scene now. Even better, we should have already been giving free education at university levels for all our students. Our students are our assets. There is no wastage of public funds when the funds are actually utilized for educating the people of the country.

However, It is sad that we have chose to say that we are separate although we are citizens of the same country. It is sad to say that we have separate institutions for different races so that we can each try to out do the other race. It is sad to say that we are Malaysians but we have three different types of education systems! It is sad to see our students in the university, who are suppose to be forward looking and open minded being so lost in their own tiny world.

Why should they protest if non-bumis are allowed to study with them? Are the non-bumis a threat to them? Of course not! No one is a threat to anyone. Everyone should be given equal opportunity. I have just one thing to ask the guys from MARA who joined the rally on Tuesday. Just imagine what your reaction will be if you were in a country which you call home and be told that you can’t study in this institution because you are not of a specific race. Or your parents tell you that they won’t finance your education because you are not worth it! Just take a minute and ponder upon it. I am sure you will realize the hurt the non-malays go through everyday in our present Malaysia which we call home.

You guys got to understand one thing, we are not telling you that you should not pursue your studies. We are just saying that everyone should have equal opportunity. We are not a threat. We just want to be accepted. We are born in the same land. There is nothing different in us. We breathe the same air. Lets change and live as one big family. Stop trying to identify yourselves as a race. Start thinking like a Malaysian and not a Bumiputra. Be like Abdul Khalid. He has not betrayed his race. He has just proved that he is a true Malaysian!

Boy, am I glad to see Abdul Khalid Ibrahim as Selangor’s MB. He is really carrying out his duties as promised. It takes a courageous person and a man of values to make such a suggestion as you made especially in today’s political arena where the racial card is the one most played with. Hat’s off to you Sir! You really have the Malaysian spirit!

Menteri Besar’s Bad Idea

The Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim has triggered a outburst amongst the Malays in Selangor in when he suggested that UITM opens it doors to a 10% allocation to Non-Bumiputera’s to enter the University. The 10% would consist of the “other races” and foreign students. His reason for the suggestion , this would raise the education quality as well as instill the spirit of competition among students at the UiTM.

Repercutions?

He was in for a rude shock yesterday morning when thousands of UiTM students marched to his office in Shah Alam to protest the idea.

Banners such as “UiTM Hak Bumputera Selamanya” (UiTM will forever belong to Bumiputras), “Selamatkan UiTM” (Save UiTM), “We are not racists, we are just activists protecting our rights” and “10% = 12,000 non-Bumi — Malays’ and Bumis’ rights are being denied” were displayed during the students’ march, allegedly with the approval of the university administration.

Its gone so far till the Prime Minister has come out and slammed the idea by saying that

“”He has no power to do that. Matters related to (student) intakes is under the jurisdiction of higher educational institutions”

You can understand that we Malaysians are not used to changes or anything that could take us out of our comfort zones but really, we all know that its simply a suggestion that came our of good intent.

Don’t we ever beleive in talking before re-acting?

The Tank man

I heard about the tank man from a friend sometime ago and how his brave theatrics against the Chinese Tanks during the Tiananmen Square protests on 5 June 1989.

Tank Man, or the Unknown Rebel, is the nickname of an anonymous man who became internationally famous when he was videotaped and photographed during the Tiananmen Square protests on 5 June 1989. Several photographs were taken of the man, who stood in front of a column of Chinese Type 59 tanks, preventing their advance. The man stood alone in the middle of the road as the tanks approached.

He held two bags, one in each hand. As the tanks came to a stop, he appeared to be trying to wave them away. In response, the front tank attempted to drive around the man, but the man repeatedly stepped into the path of the tank in a show of nonviolent action. After blocking the tanks, the man climbed up onto the top of the lead tank and had a conversation with the driver. Reports of what he said to the driver vary, including “Why are you here? My city is in chaos because of you”;..

“Go back, turn around, and stop killing my people”; and “Go away.”

Video footage shows that anxious onlookers then pulled the man away and absorbed him into the crowd and the tanks continued on their way.

Why Such Heavy Police Presence?

The whole town was in almost in a stand still today  as we were making way to the work. Why? Because the government had inside information via blogs, sms and word off mouth. The intellengence showed that the BN folks had even details of a PKR meeting. Pretty impressive isnt it? :)

Its good that he government are taking precautions based on their intelligence. Its great that they want to ensure that nothing serious happens and order is maintained but i don’t see why some blocks are necesary. There was a block on the federal highway heading towards KL after the EPF turn off, the cops were hardly checking the cars but just made 3 lanes to 2 lanes and instructing traffic to move to the bottle-neck. There was another road block in front of Shell/Petronas across the road of Eastin Hotel.

Why?? Ok..even if there was proper justification, how do you explain the fact that they were doing absolutely nothing? Weird isnt it? Sometimes, when you intend to curb a problem or take preventive measures..DO IT WELL!! if now it really causes so much trouble for the people.

I hope the Home Minister had answers for those questions?

Kelana Jaya July 6th Protest-Full Story

This is my full report to the Protest Sejuta Rakyat which was held at the Kelana Jaya stadium today(6th July 2008). I was at Giant Kelana Jaya at 9am meeting some friends from the Pakatan Rakyat Facebook group. We started walking towards the stadium at about 945am.

It was about a 15minutes walk from where we met. Getting there was no drama as we only had to follow the sea of red, if one didn’t know what was happening he/she would think there was a football match between Liverpool and Manchester United at the Kelana Jaya stadium.

As we got closer to the stadium, we could hear the loud cry of REFORMASI ringing in echo style. When we reached the stadium we made our way in greeted by the Hindaf members who were having a session of their own outside the stadium.
